Who Thrives In Franchising And Who Doesn’t

A mid-career professional considering a franchise after a layoff.

In short

Rob Lancit wrote this in September 2025 against a weak job market. He cites corporate job cuts peaking above 740,000 and a July jobs report of 73,000 new positions, with the two earlier months revised down to 19,000 and 14,000. His point is that many newly unemployed people will consider buying a franchise, and that not all of them should.

He names three signs that franchising is the wrong choice. The free spirit who questions authority and prefers gut instinct to systems. The person who wants a hands-off business and believes a franchise runs itself. The risk-averse person who will not put household capital on the line. He says plainly that none of these are faults and that they may point to strengths elsewhere.

His own description of franchising is unsentimental: it is work, and it is business ownership with firm guardrails. The owner has to follow a model refined over years and has to trust the franchisor and fellow franchisees. The person who fits is disciplined enough to follow a proven system, wants to keep learning, is coachable, wants to belong to something larger, knows their own values, and is prepared for the problems that he says no consultant or broker readily admits during the investigation. He leaves the decision to the reader.

“It’s not some passive income paradise.”
