The announcement: Take My Advice, I’m Not Using It is published
A reader deciding whether the book is for them, in the author’s own first description of it.
In short
This is the post in which Rob Lancit tells his professional network he has published a book. He expects people to assume that after decades in franchising, as a franchisee, franchisor, executive and consultant, his first book would be about the industry. It is not. He says it is about something he has more experience with than franchising, which is making mistakes.
He describes Take My Advice, I’m Not Using It as a collection of true stories from his life: wins, failures, heartbreak, family, relationships, bad spending choices, fatherhood, loss and reinvention. Every chapter ends with a lesson. He is clear that this is not because he has life figured out or has followed his own advice, which is where the title comes from.
He wrote it for his kids. Over the years he gave them plenty of advice, most of it unrequested by his own guess, and he came to think that advice without the story behind it is only a parent giving instructions. He wanted them to know where the lessons came from, including the choices he got wrong and the consequences that taught him more than the successes did. Some chapters are funny and some are painful. He says he became a published author the day before the post.
“But advice without the story behind it is just a parent telling you what to do.”
